Thank you for your support! Mariposa County will be granting the Mariposa County Arts Council $51,000 again this year!
The County budget process is a huge job which culminates in the review, change and approval to the draft budget. Each Supervisor, with their very best focus on what their constituents expect, and what the County needs, adds and subtracts funds from hundreds of line items. The sad challenge is how to deal with tragic losses. Losses of jobs, unfilled positions, purchases, plans and programs. County staff provides information that helps guide decisions, answer questions, track changes and professionally guide the process to a final budget. Our sincere appreciation goes to all involved, particularly our five Supervisors, who voted unanimously to approve funding for the Arts Council!
The community demonstrated support for the Arts Council through email messages, personal contacts, and showing up in force for budget hearings on September 17th . Supervisors graciously added additional chairs for the audience. Many Mariposa citizens spoke with allegiance, fervor and dedication of the value of the Arts in our community. Setting the tone, Supervisor Cann spoke passionately about how the Arts enhance our quality of life and our visitors' stay.
Points impressed upon the Supervisors included:
- The Arts Council is an economic engine
- The Art programs support local businesses
- The Arts enhance our recreational environment and our lifestyle
Excerpts from a few of the emails to the Supervisors:
- The MCAC is a priceless educational forum, community asset, and resource of fine art. It is all of this for locals, tourists, students, professors, artists, and anyone else who ends up on its threshold. The Arts Council is one of the primary attractions of living in Mariposa for my husband and I and I am certain that many other UC faculty share that belief.
- With the limited exception of the Sixth Street Cinema, our small county is nearly void of most of the cultural amenities, common place in the larger towns and cities of the State. The culture of a community is the soul of the community. The Mariposa Arts Counsel serves to fill that very basic need with their broad variety of programs and events. I believe it is wrong thinking to consider such human services as non-essential.
- Among west coast storytellers and storytelling fans, Mariposa is the BEST FESTIVAL in the West...BY FAR! It is the best run, the most comfortable--plus, Marilyn Rudzik, who is your volunteer producer for this festival, has an impeccable reptutation with other storytelling event producers and with many professional tellers. YOUR Festival has an amazing draw to your area with people traveling from all over the state to attend. Do not jeopardize that great "calling card" just to save a few dollars.
Thank you to our Supervisors and our loyal art community!
